T-U-S Part 16: The Meaning of Untapped Potential

At some point in our life, we have to ask ourselves if we are living the life we were meant to be living. Are we giving maximum effort each day? Are we fulfilling our purpose in life? Why am I not where I want to be? How are my thoughts, feelings, and actions focused? These questions can help you get and stay on track. Time is a blessing we often forget each day. That means we have to start to use our time more wisely. You have an opportunity to make sure the time that you have can be used for something amazing. Perhaps to see the beauties of life and what the world has to offer. To get to that point, we must be able to give maximum effort each day. We all have this untapped potential within us, waiting to be unshackled. In this blog, I want to talk with you about that potential and how to release it.

What is untapped potential

Untapped potential is the energy not used in a given time. In simple terms, energy means the ability to do work. As a human, we replenish our energy by sleeping(resting) and eating. We must have a proper diet and sleep schedule that helps to promote maximum energy each day. You have to eat foods that serve you and listen to your body when it wants to rest. I know the world is filled with distractions, but you have to learn how to avoid those pitfalls because they will hinder you from reaching your maximum potential. That untapped potential you have within you is what your brain is hiding from you.

The brain can be lazy at times and would rather do a lower-energy activity than an activity that would require more energy and focus. Have you ever tried to get in shape, learn a language, or do a puzzle? Can you remember a time when you didn’t want to continue due to fatigue? Well, at that low moment of energy resides and the opportunity to do/give more than you think you can initially. This is like getting up when you get knocked down or to keep going after your brain and body tell you to stop. I look for this moment all the time in my life. The easiest way I find and teach this moment is when on the treadmill. I wait for the moment until my brain is telling me to stop because I cannot go on anymore. Well, what I do is ignore that intuition my brain is telling me because I know it is lazy. I have so much more to give than my brain will initially let me know.

Knowing that your brain can be the biggest obstacle in your life means you have to learn how to conquer your lesser self. This, in turn, will help you to reach that untapped potential (I do this by goal setting and being stubborn.) I tell myself something and make sure that I go for it until I get it. Sometimes I have to modify my goals to be in line with what I am seeking, but I stay in that zone where I have more to give. I can work a crazy amount of hours a week and still have time to work out and enjoy life. Oftentimes people fill their life with things that will limit what they can offer each day. That is why learning how to uncover and use that untapped potential can help to propel you to a better tomorrow.

How can it help

Finding and unlocking that untapped potential can help you to be more than you were yesterday. A simple example would be that if you run a mile in 13 minutes on Monday and Friday, you beat your record by any margin, then you have shown growth. Your mind and your body work together to get you to your goals more quickly. Using a form of reverse psychology on yourself can help motivate you to do the things you may not favor. Perhaps you told yourself that if your goal is one mile, then you can get the mile done ASAP so that you can watch a movie. I call this the reward system, and I use it frequently to reach many of my goals in life. Running a mile might not sound like a good time, but when you have a reward after the completion of the task will make it more enticing. The rewards can be whatever will give you a spark to do a higher-level energy activity. That means you can accomplish tasks and complete goals that will have a direct impact on your quality of life. You will not only be able to work more but also be more efficient in the process. That means in a 24-hour day, you will eventually be able to accomplish more than the old version of yourself.

Looking at the advancements in technology, we can understand the benefit of unleashing that untapped potential. Can you remember the days of dial-up internet? You would have to go to AOL and use a land/phone line to connect to the internet. Once logged in, you might have to wait 15-30 seconds to load a web page. Sometimes this would be longer, but a lot of time was wasted waiting for our pages to load. Today, we have the internet that is quick enough to open those same web pages in less than a second. So where did those other 30 seconds go? Well, if you were on the internet for an hour each day, that means you would essentially gain 30 more minutes in search power from how it was to where it is now. That is how your untapped potential can help you. You can make a typical 24-hour day more productive because you found a way to get more done in the same amount of time.

How to find it

The easiest way to find your untapped potential is to start doing a task you want to accomplish. Once starting the task, you have to set yourself up for success so that no matter what, you will accomplish it. This is where a coach/mentor has a huge impact. Accountability for reaching the goals that you set will help you to reach any goal. Often people give up before they can accomplish their goals. A coach will reassure you and help you to see that the goals you have set can be accomplished. Getting outside of your comfort zone is where you will do the most growth in your life, so learning how to reach that area of endless potential is key to your daily success. If you are not in a position to get a coach, then find someone who can hold you accountable for not reaching your goals.

How to use it efficiently

Using your untapped potential efficiently will be the most important factor in your success. Now that you understand you can give more each day, you have the ability to do more good for yourself or do more bad. For example, if you learned how to get your work done in four hours instead of eight. Essentially you gained four extra hours to your day because you got all the work done, but how you spend those hours will separate you from the regular person. I think a typical person who gained four hours in a day would use it for a lower energy activity like being on their phone or some type of television show/video. How you use those four hours matters.

If you decide that in those extra four hours, you will set some time for enjoyment but also some time for growth, then that is a good thing. You can still enjoy life while working your behind off. I think people have a case of bad time management. When teaching them how to get more out of themselves, which gives them more out of the day, time is what needs to be defined. So make sure to use the time you gain for things that will promote growth in your life. Also, make sure to set some time to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures. You do not have to drown yourself in more work, especially when you see constant growth each day in the areas you seek.

Conclusion

If you are one of those people who blame the world for their troubles and have their own pity party because life is hard, then I urge you to take a look inside. Take a look at what you have left in the tank and plan accordingly. If you think you are empty, then you need to relearn what drives you. The 40% rule is for when you feel like you can’t go on. When you think you are at your max, I want you to understand you are only at 40%. It takes some time for the brain to unlock that extra 60%. However, once you realize that you have more in the tank at all times, then you will see tremendous growth. This growth will encompass more than just your physical because when you learn how to tap into your hidden potential, your world begins to refocus. That new focus on life is an understanding that you are more than you think and have more to give each day. Your untapped potential is your greatest treasure right now, so develop a way to tap into it today.
