When the word conscious pops into my mind or rolls across my lips, I cannot help but notice my overall well-being. The state of being conscious can be one of your best tools when leaping to refine to a more positive mindset. We are an accumulation of thoughts, feelings, and actions, which lead to our behaviors in life. Our consciousness has more power than many people let them believe. It has the power to change your life for better or for worse, and the determining factor in that is you. In this blog, I want to take a look at consciousness and explain how being aware of what is going on with your life can be the key to reaching your most desired life.
According to Verywellmind.com – “The conscious mind involves all of the things that you are currently aware of and thinking about. It is somewhat akin to short-term memory and is limited in terms of capacity. Your awareness of yourself and the world around you is part of your consciousness.”
Our brain is continually churning away whether we want it to or not. Statistics show that we have about 50 thoughts per second and about 70,000 thoughts per day. Looking at those numbers is crazy to fathom how much our brains are working. I, for one, can’t remember every 70,000 of those thoughts, but I do remember the thoughts that brought forth any emotions or actions on my behalf. I believe that within my actions resides the key to continued success. They say when one door closes, another one opens. I think this is also true when it comes to our consciousness. If you can focus on doing the correct thinking and actions that are in those 70,000, then you can make great strides toward your desired life.
We are faced with an onslaught of thoughts each day. Our job is to control which thoughts we focus on and which we let pass us. There will be thoughts that will promote growth and prosperity and other thoughts that will serve you no benefit. The same is true for the actions we take after our thinking. For example, if you are bored and reach for your phone instead of fixing the boredom with something productive. Being bored or lazy is self-imposed by you. That is your mind setting limitations on yourself that is not true. No matter what is going on in your mind, you are in charge of the outcome. If you find yourself doing one thing when you had hoped to do another, that is the product of poor thinking/planning.
The actions you take will lead to the life you desire. Even though that understanding has been proven, there are still people taking the wrong actions. These people will be on their cellphones, laptops, televisions, and game systems all day and wonder why they are not where they want to be in life. The simple remedy for directing our actions to things that will serve us is to become more conscious of what we do each day. When you pick up your cell phone, do you need to be holding it, or are you looking for an escape/time-waster? Being conscious of your actions is just as important as being conscious of your feelings.
All human emotions have a purpose and should be felt. Emotions are supposed to last 90 seconds, but we tend to make them last more than that. Even more so, we tend to prolong negative emotions longer than we do our positive emotions. I sometimes would wonder why our brains have this backward. Through my findings, I have found the reason to be our inbred anxiety. The brain is in a constant state of what is good/bad and safe/unsafe for us. That is why when you start to work out and your heart rate spikes for the first time, your brain is sending you signals to stop because “something must be wrong”. I believe the same is true when it comes to feeling emotions. We hold onto those negative emotions and try to find a reason why we are feeling like that. Well, more often than not, negative emotions are attached to learned behavior.
Being conscious of our learned behavior can save us from many heartaches. There comes a time in the day when you have to start making some choices. We are creatures of habit, and those habits ultimately determine the outcome of our life. We choose to either read a book/blog or watch television. We choose to go out for exercise or stay inside and sit on the sofa all day. In the end, we can choose to promote better consciousness in our days to have better control over our behaviors/habits. The challenging part is to do CONSISTENTLY what promotes success, and that is where consciousness can be a tremendous benefit to us.
There is a simple law of life, and that is, the actions we take will get us the results we want. Society has evolved over the years to be technologically rich and advanced. Technology as a whole has been great for society, but it has also changed our behaviors drastically. Looking back at the 1980s/1990s, there were still kids going outside and playing until dark. That was normal for kids growing up. Now we have to force our kids to go out and play. We have to get a pry bar to get them up from the sofa or off their cell phone/gaming system. This new lifestyle of the new generation was not by accident. This was caused by parents and the norm of society influencing this new behavior. The youth created a consciousness that was comfortable, easy, and lackadaisical. This type of consciousness is creating a new way of life, and if not tied to ambition/motivation, then we will have adults who lack the skills needed to succeed.
As an adult, you should have an understanding of the things you do in your day. If you are on your phone and should be working or doing homework, then you lack action consciousness. Bad habits and actions stop us from being successful. You want to be in shape, but you rather be on your phone all day. You want an abundance of wealth, but you keep going into debt, buying material things. You want a healthy relationship but cannot even respect yourself. You want to be happy/happier, but you are unwilling to get out of your comfort zone to achieve a better life for yourself. Being conscious of the things we do is the first step in uncovering the path that will lead us to our most desired life.
There will come times when you have to take a step back and look at your thoughts, feelings, and actions to determine what kind of life they are bringing you. Are they able to get you where you want to be in life? I know firsthand that many of my old ways of thinking and living life would not get me to where I am currently in my life. I had to make effective changes that would lead to a more pronounced form of consciousness in my days. I wanted to be in control of all I did and understand why I did what I did. If I was on my phone instead of doing work or sitting idle when I should have been handling my business, then I had to adjust my mindset to reflect where I wanted to be instead of where I currently was. I am sure my mind would like nothing else more than to sit on the sofa and watch television all day. However, the life I want will not come from that action. That is why I chose a consciousness that chooses to keep going regardless of what obstacles I face.
Our consciousness is one of the pillars needed to achieve great things in our life. You can look at anyone who has succeeded in life and find where their consciousness was directed at. The Wright Brothers wanted to build a flying machine, and that is what they did. Henry Ford wanted to create a vehicle that did not need horses to pull it, and that is what he did. There are many examples of people who have done great things in their life. They didn’t accomplish their goals by dreaming alone. They took control of where their mind was focused on achieving their goals. They created a consciousness and a mindset that would get them the results they desired. You can achieve great things in your life too. Your consciousness is a necessary key to all you can be in life.
Until then,
